Zentralbanken sind als Monopolisten, die staatliches Fiat-Geld (Zwangsgeld) ausgeben, nicht dazu da, den Volkswirtschaften zu helfen, sondern um fiskalisch verschwenderischen Regierungen dabei zu helfen, sich billig und heimlich zu finanzieren. Als Reaktion auf die Verbreitung (und Bedrohung) von Kryptowährungen haben die Zentralbanken in letzter Zeit Pläne verfolgt, ihr Papiergeld in digitaler Form auszugeben. Nach Angaben der BIZ erforschen 86 % von ihnen aktiv digitale Zentralbankwährungen (CBDC), 60 % experimentieren damit und 14 % haben Pilotprojekte. Die Befürworter behaupten, dass CBDCs den Zentralbanken helfen werden, das Zahlungssystem, die Inflation und die Wirtschaft besser zu steuern. Aber auch ruchlose Motive sind wahrscheinlich, die mit der "modernen Geldtheorie" und direkteren Mitteln zur Finanzierung verschwenderischer Regierungen zu tun haben.
