Viele Länder haben in letzter Zeit Wirtschaftssanktionen gegen Russland verhängt. Ist das richtig? Wirksam? In "The Roots of War" (1966) argumentierte Ayn Rand, dass "die Essenz der Außenpolitik des Kapitalismus der Freihandel ist - d.h. die Abschaffung von Handelsschranken, Schutzzöllen und Sonderprivilegien - die Öffnung der Welthandelswege für den freien internationalen Austausch und Wettbewerb zwischen den Privatbürgern aller Länder, die direkt miteinander handeln." Aber sie war auch gegen den Handel der USA mit Amerikas Todfeinden (z. B. der UdSSR). In dieser Sitzung werden wir erörtern, ob und wann Wirtschaftssanktionen gerechtfertigt sind und welche Auswirkungen sie typischerweise haben (zum Guten oder zum Schlechten). Wie protektionistische Maßnahmen schaden Sanktionen oft demjenigen, der sie verhängt, mehr als demjenigen, dem sie auferlegt werden.

Das Wesen Amerikas sind seine Freiheiten, seine Rechte und sein kapitalistisches System; folglich liegt das Eigeninteresse der Vereinigten Staaten darin, diese Werte zu bewahren und sie weder zu opfern noch aufzugeben, vor allem nicht aus so genannten "humanitären" (altruistischen) Motiven, nur um geplagten Ausländern zu helfen. Die USA müssen ihre Verbündeten und Feinde rational identifizieren und dann entsprechend handeln. Sie dürfen niemals nationale Verteidigung für andere Nationen leisten, die meist nur vorgeben, souverän zu sein. Rationaler Egoismus rechtfertigt weder Pazifismus, noch Isolationismus, noch Imperialismus. Amerika kann weder sein Wesen noch seine Institutionen bewahren, noch kann es wieder einen Weg finden, nur die richtigen Kriege zu führen und zu gewinnen, ohne dem egoistischen Prinzip zu folgen. Es muss ein moralisches Vorbild für die Welt sein, aber niemals ihr Polizist.
